Into the sturgeon’s habitat

A unique experience

Many different qualities and origins have been attributed to caviar over the course of history. Among the most commonly held beliefs, it is thought to have first been produced by the Turks, Cossacks or Persians. The Cossacks were the first to consume it, and interestingly believed it boosted their physical strength. In Ancient Rome, it was believed that this delicacy had healing properties. The first written record of caviar consumption can be found during the time of Catherine the Great (late 18th century). However, it was not until the 20th century, and specifically until the year of the Russian Revolution (1917), that it spread throughout Europe. Members of the Russian aristocracy who had fled to France began to serve sturgeon roe at high society banquets and parties. And so, caviar started to become known as a luxury product throughout Europe. Learn about this history and many other interesting facts about Riofrío caviar during your visit.
