ELABORATION
Each varietal was hand-picked separately in cases. The musts were transferred to small stainless steel tanks at low temperature. The musts were bled off to concentrate, except Graciano. Pre-fermentative and post-fermentative maceration in contact with the skins for 28 days. Malolactic fermentation in undergorund concrete tanks.
Each variety was aged separately for 34 months in new extra-fine grain French Allier oak barrels. After the final tasting of all the barrels, the very best 22 were selected to elaborate the assemblage that will be bottled.
After bottling, the wine is aged for a minimum of 42 months in our underground cellars.
TASTING NOTE
A very deep, bright, cherry-red wine with light cherry colored glints. On the nose, it is impressive when served in the glass, with exceptional oaky notes, reminiscent of mahogany, vanilla and toffee. It is complex, with ripe fruit, blackberry, blueberry and black plum. On the palate is full and elegant, with an exquisite natural acidity that envelops a polished and silky tannin, with a perfect balance between fruit and oak over a mineral background. A wine with a very long finish, where notes of noble woods and stewed fruits reappear.
HISTORY AND ORIGIN
At the end of the 19th Century, our founder, Celestino Navajas made the first wines to bear our name in two handcrafted forged iron and oak casks. The smaller of the two vats gave rise to a wine that was aged in 22 oak barrels. 22 Barricas, or 22 barrels in English, is made in tribute to our founder and the winery’s centuries of legacy and winemaking philosophy, which has been studied with respect and adapted to the current day. A wine born from four parcels of vines, of more than 50 years of age, as a blend of four varieties: Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha and Mazuelo. 6,600 bottles of a surprising Gran Reserva, which is lively, intense and flavourful and goes beyond the limits of classicism.
