ELABORATION
Made from grapes from vineyards over 40 years old, with yields of 4,700kg/ha. A small vineyard planted in the area between Fuenmayor and Cenicero, Rioja Alta. The grapes were transported to the winery in small trailers to avoid breakage of the clusters. Once the grapes were destemmed and crushed, they were conveniently macerated during alcoholic fermentation at a controlled temperature of 26-28º C, achieving perfect extraction. Subsequently, after alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation began naturally. 36 months of aging in American and French Allier oak barrels. Once the fullness of its aging had been reached, it was bottled to rest and evolve for a minimum of 15 years before being marketed.
TASTING NOTES
It has a very full color, medium-high layer. Ruby red with orange nuances but without much evolution. On the nose it is very powerful and with great style, like a good perfume. Initial notes of truffle and tobacco. After oxygenation, candied fruit and dates appear with a background of hay and dried herbs. Very changing and complex. The palate is unctuous and long with a lively acidity that makes it very expressive. Very long in the aftertaste where that candied fruit and smoky notes reappear. It surprises again throughout the tasting due to its enormous complexity.
HISTORY AND ORIGIN
Wines that are authentic icons and living history of our winery. Made exclusively in exceptional vintages, those that offer us robust, powerful and structured wines, with enormous aging potential. In our cellars rests this collection of historical vintages that dates back to 1926. 2001, a vintage that inaugurates a new millennium and that is already part of the history of Rioja for its exceptional quality. The average of the analytical parameters is undoubtedly the best obtained to date, even higher than those of such emblematic vintages as that of 1994.
VINTAGE: 2001. Excellent.
Temperatures were mild in winter and exceptionally high in specific periods of spring, reaching values of 40 degrees in May and June. This meant some moments of water stress in vineyards with clay soils. The incidence of frost and hail was very little relevant. A harvest was obtained with very concentrated grapes with a great skin-to-pulp ratio, with a very homogeneous quality, which translated into wines with excellent parameters in tannic concentration, alcoholic strength and acidity.
