Montecillo Gran Reserva Selección Especial 1981
1981
The huge snowfall that occurred in May 1981 caused a significant reduction in the volume of the vintage, but the later evolution of the growth cycle finally rewarded us with grapes of exceptional quality. A smaller vintage than that of 1982, but with very high quality.

ELABORATION
A small vineyard planted in dry land, in the area between Fuenmayor and Cenicero, Rioja Alta, more than 60 years old. Manual harvest and transported to the winery in small carriers. Fermentation with long macerations in steel tanks at a controlled temperature (28ºC) lasting more than a month of contact with the skins, 35 days. It was then transferred to underground cement tanks where malolactic fermentation will end. Aged for 42 months in American (80%) and French (20%) oak barrels with a medium toast. Once the fullness of its aging had been reached, it was bottled to rest and evolve for a minimum of 15 years before being marketed.
TASTING NOTES
Intense and bright with visible dregs, normal for its age and the result of non-aggressive stabilization before bottling. Cherry red in color, with a brick-colored trim. Bright and healthy, with a low coat. After decanting and oxygenation, aromas of fresh leather and eucalyptus appear surrounded by marked aniseed, cinnamon and black pepper notes. Voluptuous and balsamic, where notes of candied fruits always present are highlighted by notes of toasted oak. Intense and elegant, with a silky tannin that harmonizes perfectly with its natural acidity. With a liquorous and lively finish.

VINTAGE: 1981. Very good.
This vintage was marked by a significant snowfall in the month of May, which affected a large number of small branches and shoots in the Rioja vineyard. Thanks to favorable summer weather and prior to harvest, damage was minimized and a very good harvest was obtained, with healthy grapes and excellent acidity.
