Fuenmayor, 15 December 2020.- Bodegas Montecillo further strengthens its commitment to excellence. The third oldest Rioja DOCa winery is ending the year on a high. The editors of the prestigious US magazine Wine Spectator have ranked Montecillo Rioja Reserva 2013 number 25 on its list of the top 100 wines from 2020, awarding it 92 points.

Based on quality, value and availability, this annual list honours the most successful wineries, regions and vintages around the world. This year, more than 11,000 wines (600 of which were Spanish) have been reviewed, with only 9 from Spain making it on to the acclaimed list, including three Riojas, Montecillo Rioja Reserva 2013 being one of them.

Montecillo Rioja Reserva 2013 was produced from a difficult vintage for Spain, and particularly the Rioja DOCa. A summer which was colder than normal, coupled with too much rain at the beginning of September, meant that the end of the growth cycle was challenging. This was a significant concern, given that the quality of the grapes used for Montecillo Reserva is fundamental.

Despite this, Bodegas Montecillo managed to create an extraordinary reserva, which combines intense and delicate aromatic notes, and has an opulent body. For this coupage, created by our winemaker Mercedes García, three varieties of grapes were used – Tempranillo (90%), Mazuelo (7%) and Garnacha (3%). Each variety was harvested and prepared separately, this being a hallmark of Bodegas Montecillo. The wine was then aged in traditional barrels made from French oak (70%) and American oak (30%) for 25 months, before being bottled and left to slowly continue ageing for another 20 months. The result is a ‘plump red [which] offers mulled cherry and plum flavours, with notes of cinnamon, sandalwood and cedar. Light tannins are well-integrated, while orange peel acidity keeps this fresh and focused. Harmonious and generous’, according to the tasting panel at Wine Spectator. It is a wine that goes perfectly with meat dishes, cured meat and cheese, and stews, making it a must this Christmas.

This year, Bodegas Montecillo has received a number of awards from prestigious magazines, a reflection of its unfailing commitment to excellence, quality and uniqueness. Its success over 2020 has also served to confirm its position as a leading premium brand, and further strengthen its prestige and reputation as an expert producer of ageworthy and exceptional wines.

As such, just a few months ago, Wine Enthusiast, an important US wine magazine and one of the most influential in the world, ranked Montecillo Crianza 2016 number 1 on its list Top 100 Best Buys, awarding it 90 points. These achievements come on the back of the outstanding ratings given by other equally important magazines, such as Decanter, which awarded Montecillo Crianza 2016 91 points and included it on the cover of its March edition, titled The Best of Spain, and Mundus Vini, which awarded it its Gold Medal.

Bodegas Montecillo is pushing full steam ahead with its international expansion, despite the challenging circumstances caused by the pandemic, which are seeing consumer habits and ways of socialising changing, and people being more careful with what they spend. For example, in the USA, Osborne is continuing to see its sales volume for wine grow, with a 16.6% increase over 2020 compared to 2019. Here, sales revenue for wine is growing faster than volume due to the efforts of the group to premiumise its brands. Bodegas Montecillo, for its part, is currently experiencing a rate of growth greater than the group’s average for this segment (27.9% in sales revenue and 20.2% in sales volume), and is consolidating its position as a leader in premium Rioja in this market.

Montecillo Rioja Reserva 2013 is available on Osborne’s online shop: https://www.osborne.es/bodegas-montecillo. RRP: €12.00.

Founded in 1870 by Don Celestino Navajas Matute and purchased by the Osborne family in 1973, Bodegas Montecillo is Fuenmayor’s oldest winery and the third oldest of the Rioja DOCa. Its commitment to excellence and quality have seen it become a world leader in ageworthy wine. Its underground caves house vintages from as far back as 1926, as well as an impressive wine cellar, where hundreds of bottles of gran reserva are stacked one on top of the other, forming an ensemble so sturdy that you could walk on top of it. The traditional process followed at Bodegas Montecillo, which has been passed down through the generations, sees the wine rest untouched until it reaches the outstanding quality made possible by the reductive power of time. The result is wine which encapsulates the visionary spirit of two great families, whose passion for their work has created a century-old legacy and timeless brand.
