Flor de Caña becomes the only spirit in the world to be certified ‘carbon neutral’
El Puerto de Santa María, 3 June 2020.- Flor de Caña, Nicaragua’s sustainably produced premium rum, has recently been awarded the Carbon Neutral Certification, thanks to the commitment of the brand to sustainability and its plan to reduce its carbon footprint. Some of the environmental protection measures adopted by Flor de Caña which have allowed it to achieve this certification include: distilling its rum using 100% renewable energy, planting 50,000 trees each year since 2005 and being Fair Trade certified, meaning it supports farmers and workers in order to improve their quality of life and empower their communities.
The certification has been awarded by the Carbon Trust, the world’s main independent carbon certification body and a global leader in measuring and certifying carbon footprints in accordance with the international standard PAS 2060, an internationally recognised specification which deals with carbon neutrality. This standard requires the carbon footprint of the entire life cycle of Flor de Caña to be measured and certified, there to be a plan in place to reduce carbon emissions and remaining emissions to be offset.
Silvana Centty, Senior Manager at the Carbon Trust, has explained how ‘the Carbon Trust has certified Flor de Caña as a carbon neutral rum’, going on to add that ‘there is no doubt this is a reflection of their ongoing efforts to cut their carbon emissions’.
Flor de Caña is recognised as an industry leader in terms of its sustainable approach, and is the only spirit in the world to have been certified ‘carbon neutral’ by the Carbon Trust, as well as be Fair Trade certified.
In terms of corporate social responsibility, since 1913 this brand of premium rum has been offering free education for the children of its employees at the company’s own school, which currently has 600 students. What’s more, since 1958, its hospital has been providing free healthcare for its employees and their families, carrying out more than 400 operations and 170 deliveries each year.
Moreover, for almost 30 years, Flor de Caña has been the main benefactor of APROQUEN, a non-profit organisation which has provided more than 600,000 consultations, check-ups and operations for children suffering from burns or with a cleft lip or palate.
