Carlos I is awarded a gold and silver medal at the ISW Meininger Spirits Awards 2021
El Puerto de Santa María, 9 of February 2021.- The Brandies de Jerez Solera Gran Reserva Carlos I Imperial XO and Carlos I 1520 have recently been awarded a gold and silver medal respectively at the prestigious ISW Meiningers International Spirit Awards, held in Germany. Both accolades are the result of the excellent scores given by the jury, made up of renowned experts, which took into account their quality, harmony, complexity, body and persistence.
This international competition is considered to be one of the most important events in the world of spirits, and especially for brandy, not surprising considering the fact that Germany is the largest European brandy market, and amongst the world’s leading countries in terms of consumption. In fact, it is the top market for sales of Carlos I, which have gone up by 4.2% over the past five years.
Carlos I Imperial XO: gold medalCarlos I Imperial XO, winner of the gold medal, is an exquisite brandy, a mix of truly unique eaux de vie, some of which are aged for more than 20 years in American oak casks that once contained the best Amontillado and Oloroso sherries.
The version Carlos I Imperial XO is the result of the outstanding expertise of the brand, as well as the process and history behind it, which are present in each drop. It is a complex and smooth brandy, which is characterised by its extraordinary quality, aromatic complexity, intense mahogany colour, and notes of walnut, fig and hazelnut. To truly enjoy its silky flavour, with a sophisticated and sumptuous finish, it should be served in a lowball glass and drunk straight away.
Carlos I 1520: silver medal
Carlos I 1520, winner of the silver medal, pays tribute to the coronation of Charles I as the King of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor. It has been created by our Master Blender, Ignacio Lozano, following age-old tradition, and is the result of the fusion of three century-old soleras from Osborne’s private collection (Gran Reserva Carlos I, Gran Reserva Gran Capitán and Gran Reserva Carlos I Imperial).
It is a very special version with an unparalleled legacy, whose flavours and nuances of old wood and spices have made it deserving of this prestigious award.
These achievements are the latest in a long line of awards over recent years (such as a gold medal for Carlos I 130 Aniversario and silver medal for Carlos I Imperial, Carlos I Amontillado and Carlos I 1520 at the International Wine & Spirit Competition 2020; a trophy for Carlos I 130 Aniversario, a gold medal for Carlos I 1520 and a silver medal for Carlos I Imperial and Carlos I Pedro Ximénez at the International Spirits Challenge 2020; and a gold medal for Carlos I 1520 at the World Spirits Awards, amongst others), which ensure Carlos I continues to be one of the most sought-after brandies not just in Spain, but around the world.
Carlos I is part of a group of renowned brandies made by Bodegas Osborne, recently named ‘Brandy Producer of the Year’ at the International Spirits Challenge 2020.
Both Carlos I Imperial XO (RRP: €45.50) and Carlos I 1520 (RRP: €92.00) are available on Osborne’s online shop (www.osborne.es/carlos-i) and in Club del Gourmet (El Corte Inglés).
ABOUT CARLOS I
The history of Carlos I dates back to 1889, when a master blender in the city of Jerez discovered a number of mysterious casks in his bodega, and soon realised that inside them was the most exquisite brandy he had ever tried. ‘A flavour capable of conquering the world’, he thought, and so he called it Carlos I.
The bodega where Carlos I is made is in the centre of El Puerto de Santa María, a town in the Province of Cádiz and a strategic area thanks to its microclimate. This, combined with the solera ageing system used here, makes this unique brandy with a symphony of unparalleled flavours possible.
Carlos I belongs to the Osborne Group, Spain’s second oldest company (founded in 1772) and currently present in more than 50 countries.
