Extra Marriage celebrates the 40th anniversary of the legendary Nikka From the Barrel expression, first released in its iconic square bottle in 1985. After a “marriage” twice as long as the original edition, this whisky is a marriage of single malts from Yoichi and Miyagikyo, combined with grain whiskies made mainly from maize. These whiskies were distilled at the Coffey distillery in Scotland and shipped to Nishinomiya in 1963, before being moved to Miyagikyo in 1999.
This anniversary is brimming with energy, finesse and character, and nobly and elegantly demonstrates the main characteristics of each of the whiskies that make it up.
Colour: topaz.
TASTING NOTES:
- Nose: rich and deep. On opening, it reveals notes of beeswax, iris butter, roasted pineapple and nutmeg. The nose gradually develops into fresh ginger, malt and earthy aromas (peaty and oily). On breathing, notes of chocolate and honey appear.
- Palate: lively and sharp. On the palate it reveals medicinal notes (ointment), smoke and lemon peel, as well as the honeyed dimensions perceived on the nose. It then focuses on cocoa powder, cereals (maize, malted barley) and candied fruit (apple, mirabelle plum), with a dry, mineral and salty touch that gradually emerges.
- Finish: energetic and silky. The finish is also invigorating and medicinal, before flavours of barley sugar, bitter almond and candied ginger bring smoothness. With remarkable depth and unmatched originality, the retro-nasal fragrance ventures elegantly into the intense and opulent world of American rye whisky.
Profile: rich and deep. Beeswax, peat, mirabelle plum.
